With correct diagnosis, appropriate treatment and basic information, people with diabetes can lead full, happy and productive lives. Reid Hospital & Health Care Services and its community of care givers provide effective medical treatment, and, through community education, instruction in the skills that allow those with diabetes to enjoy in good health the normal range of human activity.
Reid offers a certified training program to help people with diabetes manage their disease. The class consists of a one-hour, one-on-one assessment and then a series of four classes. The two-hour sessions are taught in the evenings on Mondays and in the mornings on Wednesdays.
Topics include eyecare, blood glucose monitoring, exercise, sexual dysfunction, hypertension, medications, meal planning, stress management, acute and chronic complications, footcare and foot assessment and dental care.
Reid encourages patients to bring a family member or significant other.
The American Diabetes Association certified Reid's diabetes education program in October 2001 as meeting its standards as a diabetic self-management training program. This means participants may seek reimbursement from insurers for the cost.
The Reid staff of diabetes educators includes professional nurses, dietitians and pharmacists who have specialized training in diabetes management.
