for demonstrating the C.A.R.E. principles in everything she does, November's
Volunteer of the Month has completed more than a year's service in the Pain
Clinic at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services.
Martha Spencer, a resident of the New Paris, Ohio, area and a retiree after 27 years at Insurance Company of North America and 18 years at Eaton National Bank, often drops by on days off to see if any help is needed.
"Martha comes in every Wednesday to volunteer her time to help with whatever we need," wrote one nominator. "She sees we are so busy and comes in to help hours before she is scheduled. She loves to bake and brings goodies for our patients."
Confirmed one admirer, "She's eager to do anything you ask her and then some. She is just wonderful."
For more than three years after leaving the bank, Spencer was a part-time office person at Fountain City Wesleyan Church where she continues to help out with funeral dinners. She is also the Monday devotional team leader for Arbor Trace.
"I was totally shocked to be named Volunteer of the Month," Spencer said. "The gals I work with are absolutely wonderful. They are very nice and have endless compassion for the patients. They never have an unkind word to say about anyone."
"Seeing the other side of healthcare has made me more understanding of others' pain and circumstances," Spencer writes of her Reid experience. "That's not something you can easily relate to when you are the patient."
She and Joe, her husband of 32 years, restore old tractors and participate in parades and engine shows. In addition to her church work and baking, she finds time to collect lighthouses.
The Spencers have a son and a grandson.
