January Volunteer adds art to flower

Doris PhelpsJanuary’s Volunteer of the Month has been enhancing floral beauty and cheer in the Reid Auxiliary flower room since signing up in mid-1999.

Artist and retired banker Doris Phelps, a resident of the Williamsburg area, drew nominations for her cheer and comradery with the flower crew.

“Doris is a well known artist, and her talent shows in her floral designs,” wrote one nominator. “It is a pleasure to work with her in the flower department.”

Another noted that Phelps is a frequent recipient of art show merit awards and added, “She is always willing to help in whatever needs to be done in the floral area.”

A 1997 graduate of IU East, she attended classes for 16 years to put together a Bachelors degree that covers art and English. She includes the Richmond Art Museum in her volunteer activities.

“Volunteering is a way I can contribute to the community,” says Phelps, who has so far contributed 1,645 hours to Reid. “It’s an honor to be recognized for working with people I enjoy and learning so much about potting and flower arranging.”

Phelps is retired after a 24-year career at Second National Bank, now US Bank.

A member of the First United Methodist Church, the Richmond Artisans group and the IU East Alumni board of directors, she and Jack, her husband of 51 years, have two children and three grandchildren. They have a mutual hobby in stamp collecting.
