McConkey celebrated as August Volunteer

Betty McConkeyFormerly a nurse, Emergency Department Angel Betty McConkey has been honored as Volunteer of the Month for August.

Nominators cited her caring and compassion that brighten Mondays for the Emergency staff.

"Betty always has a smile and greeting for everyone she comes in contact with," wrote one colleague. "She uplifts all the patients and their families."

A volunteer since February of 2005, the Richmond resident is an avid reader in every category but westerns and a devoted baker.

"It is not uncommon to see big pans of desserts for the staff on Mondays," notes her citation. "She even shares her recipes with us! It is also evident that she enjoys what she is doing here in ED. She is truly an Angel in our eyes."

McConkey, an active congregant in St John's Lutheran Church and a Stephen Minister, is also a perpetual challenge to the publishers of crossword puzzles and crypto quotes.

"It is exhilarating to be chosen Volunteer of the Month," McConkey said. "It satisfies me to be busy, and serves a purpose in Reid and to the Community. I am a people person – I've never meet a stranger."

She and Dale, her husband of 47 years, have three sons and a daughter.
