Panel/Profile Component:  A total Iron is included in an IRON IBC or an IRON BIDING study.
Patient Preparation: None

SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen Type:  Serum
Drawing Requirements:  Draw blood in a gold SST or plain red serum tube.  Allow the specimen to clot for 30 minutes prior to spinning. Serum, sodium heparin plasma, and lithium heparin plasma are also acceptable specimen although serum is preferred.
Minimum Volume:   0.5 mL
Cause for Rejection: Unlabeled specimen, QNS, specimen drawn in wrong tube, excessive hemolysis, excessive icterus. Blood collection tubes containing EDTA, a strong chelator of metal ions, sodium citrate, or a combination of potassium oxalate and sodium fluoride should not be used.
Specimen Handling/Stability: Serum and plasma specimens should be separated from cells within 2 hours after venipuncture. Separated specimens are stable for 4 days at room temperature and up to 7 days at 2 ? 8 ºC. For longer storage, specimens may be frozen at -20 ºC for up to 2 months.  Specimens should be free of particulate matter. To prevent the appearance of fibrin in serum samples, complete clot formation should take place before centrifugation. Clotting time may be increased due to thrombolytic or anticoagulant therapy.
Specimen Storage Stability: Samples are maintained and saved in the laboratory for 7 days at 4 OC.
